How It Works

About Mounjaro®

Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable medication that activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Mounjaro® mimics these natural hormones involved in blood sugar control, appetite signals, and digestion.

Mounjaro® increases insulin when blood sugar is high, lowers glucagon, and slows how quickly food leaves the stomach. These actions can help you feel full longer after meals and support steadier eating habits.

Mounjaro® is administered once-weekly and is available in several dose strengths. Treatment starts low and increases gradually to allow your body to adjust.

Typical dosing progression:

  • 2.5 mg once-weekly for the first 4 weeks, used as a starting dose
  • 5 mg once-weekly after the initial adjustment phase
  • Higher doses may be used if needed: 7.5 mg, 10 mg, 12.5 mg, and 15 mg once-weekly

Doses are increased in four-week intervals to allow your body to adapt and assess how well you tolerate each step.

Mounjaro® is injected under the skin once a week, on the same day each week. It can be taken with or without food, and the time of day does not matter.

  • Inject into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm
  • Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation
  • Do not inject into a muscle or vein
  • Check that the solution is clear and colorless before use

If you miss a dose, take it within four days. If more than four days have passed, skip the missed dose and take your next dose on schedule.

If you also use insulin, the two injections must be given separately and never mixed.

Mounjaro® commonly affects the digestive system, especially during dose increases. Many effects lessen as your body adjusts.

Common reactions include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Indigestion
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

More serious but less common effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, kidney issues related to dehydration, and allergic reactions.

Seek medical attention if you experience any concerning or persistent side effects.

Because Mounjaro® slows stomach emptying, some oral medications may not be absorbed as effectively. Make sure your healthcare provider knows everything you take, including prescriptions, supplements, and over-the-counter products.

The following medications can interact with Mounjaro®:

  • Oral medications that need consistent absorption
  • Birth control pills (may not work as reliably)
  • Drugs that can raise your heart rate

Mounjaro® should not be used during pregnancy. Because it stays in the body for a long time, it is recommended to stop treatment at least one month before trying to conceive.

If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, speak with a healthcare provider before starting or continuing treatment.

Start by filling out a free online questionnaire. Your information will be reviewed, and if Mounjaro® is appropriate for you, a prescription can be issued.
